At Zuid Schalkwijkerweg in Haarlem, the design focuses on transforming an existing farmhouse into two independent dwellings with a complementary extension. The existing house of approximately 385 m² will be structurally divided and expanded into two homes of around 250 m² each.

The homes are designed for families in the 50+ age group, with two or three teenage children. In the initial phase, the emphasis is on providing a comfortable, spacious family home offering sufficient bedrooms, privacy, and generous shared living areas. The target group values luxury, comfort, and sustainability—a home that expresses quality in both function and appearance. Well-proportioned spaces, high-quality finishes, and smart layouts ensure that the homes remain suitable throughout different stages of life.

In the longer term, as children move out, housing needs shift. The design therefore incorporates flexible layout possibilities, such as creating a self-contained living or guest unit that can serve as a Bed & Breakfast (Airbnb), guest accommodation, or care unit for relatives. This flexibility allows the homes to remain fully utilized in later life stages and even contribute to additional income or social connection.

Adaptability, flexibility, and sustainability are central themes in the design process. The plan respects the existing structure and surrounding landscape, while the contemporary extension aims to seamlessly connect old and new, resulting in a cohesive and integrated whole.
